Original TDA-style thinking example

An article explains that a town reduced waste by measuring trash, teaching residents how to sort materials, and redesigning collection stations. What idea could be analyzed?

Show a strong reasoning model

Claim: The town succeeds because it uses evidence and education together. Evidence: leaders first measure the waste problem and then teach residents how to respond. Explanation: data identifies what must change, while education makes the change possible.

Original Math example

A recipe uses 3/4 cup of oats per batch. How much is needed for 3 batches? Explain the model.

Show a strong reasoning model

3 × 3/4 = 9/4 = 2 1/4 cups. Three groups of three-fourths contain nine fourths, which equals two wholes and one fourth.

The current Grade 5 Science PSSA is STEELS aligned. NYA emphasizes explaining observations, interpreting data, using models, evaluating designs and connecting evidence to claims.

Matter, forces, energy, properties, changes and evidence from observations.

Original Science example

Two bridge designs use the same amount of material. Design A holds 18 books before bending; Design B holds 31. What evidence supports choosing Design B?

Design B holds 13 more books under the same material constraint. That test result is direct evidence that B better meets the strength criterion.
